Abstract:
Asymptotic classes lie at the boarder between finite and infinite model theory. Put roughly, an asymptotic class is a class of finite first-order structures whose uniformly definable sets behave well. The main aim of my talk will be to get across the key idea behind this notion. I will also give a brief history of the subject and, should time permit, I will talk about the link with infinite model theory through ultraproduct constructions. I will do my best to make my explanations understandable to those with little knowledge of model theory.
